In this paper we examine how macrooeconomic production functions for the german R&D sector can statistically be specified by using regional data. It will be proved that the spatial structure of underlying data is not sufficiently captured within commonplace OLS-estimations. We will show how econometric models can be modified in order to highlight the effects of spatial association and to allow for knowledge spillovers between adjacent regions.
