Barriers and Drivers for Adoption of Energy Efficient and Environment Friendly Brick Kiln Technologies
To reduce carbon footprint, the country is struggling to minimize the effects of climate change by adopting cleaner and efficient brick-making technologies in the construction sector. For compulsory transition, technical solutions entail converging with social, financial factors, and information awareness of potential adopters required in the decision-making process. Adopting Forced Draught Zig-zag Kiln technology in many countries is becoming a promising solution to meet construction material demand, but its adoption in Pakistan is still untapped despite colossal saving potential. This study focuses on recognizing the barriers and drivers’ determinants that influence kiln owners’ decisions regarding the adoption of FZZK in Punjab. Initially, a list of essential determinants (barriers and drivers) was extracted from the literature. Later, detailed interviews based on Rogers’s innovation diffusion theory were organized for FZZK adopters and non-adopters like Fixed chimney Bull’s Trench Kiln (FCBTK) and Clamp type kilns. Data collected from interviews are analyzed to calculate the share of 20 drivers and 15 barriers selected for each type of technology (FZZK, FCBTK, and Clamp type kiln). Groups examined to break down drivers and barriers are ecological, specialized, technical, financial, and social. Results demonstrate that across all technologies of adoption, environmental and technical drivers like the alleviation of emission fines, decreased fuel costs with increased yield, solarizing electrical components, and incentives from the government are considered to have the most significant potential to increment the adoption of FZZK. In barriers, technical and financial perspectives like training of workers, their higher wages demand, technical support for retrofitting and absence of loans to retrofit their kiln technologies are significant hurdles in adopting FZZK. These findings give a proof premise better to comprehend arguments in favor or against FZZK, FCBTK, and Clamp type kiln
