CastAlum forges a more flexible, motivated and productive workforce
Purpose – This paper aims to describe an award‐winning training program at UK aluminium die‐casting company CastAlum. Design/methodology/approach – The paper explains the reasons for the program, the form it took and the results it achieved. Findings – The paper details how the Rising to the Challenge ‐ Building the Capability program increased flexibility and skills among the workforce, boosted employee morale and retention and encouraged teamwork and the generation and implementation of new ideas. Practical Implications – The paper highlights the financial turn‐around that the company achieved against the background of a downturn in the automobile industry. Social Implications – The paper details a training program that not only helped CastAlum to move from a four‐day week to five, but also laid the foundations for expanding the workforce from 88 to 107. Originality/value – The paper provides the inside story of an award‐winning and transformational training program.
