Employee engagement “does it” for B&Q
Purpose – This paper aims to examine policies on employee engagement, work‐life balance, equal opportunities and internal communications that have proved successful at DIY retailer B&Q. Design/methodology/approach – The paper lists the company's principal initiatives in these areas and demonstrates how they contribute to profitability. Findings – The paper shows how B&Q's policies in areas such as gender equality and the employment of older workers link to overall company strategy. Practical implications – The paper explains how B&Q has translated its company values into a set of practical policies that affect employee behavior and, through this, customer satisfaction. Originality/value – The paper highlights the ways in which respecting diversity is vital to the organization's success.
