Unternehmen sind laufend gefordert, ihre Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und Erfolgspotenziale durch verschiedene strategische Maßnahmen zu sichern bzw. zu verstärken. Diese Maßnahmen können einerseits auf die Kosten-, andererseits auf die Erlösseite ausgerichtet sein: 1. Insbesondere die konjunkturelle Schwächeperiode zu Beginn der 1990er Jahre und der zunehmende Wettbewerbsdruck aus dem asiatischen Raum haben sichtbar gemacht, dass zahlreiche deutsche Unternehmen unter massiven Kostenproblemen gelitten ha-ben bzw. bis heute weiterhin leiden. Es ist zu beobachten, dass sich deutsche Unternehmen in jüngster Vergangenheit stärker mit dem Thema Kostenmanagement beschäftigt haben. Zumeist wurde Kostenmanagement reaktiv durchgeführt, d. h. auf krisenhafte Entwicklungen wurde mit pauschalen Kostensenkungsmaßnahmen (z. B. Budgetkürzungen, Personalabbau) reagiert. Als problematisch erweist sich hier neben den zu erwartenden Widerständen, dass diese Maßnahmen die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und damit das Erfolgspotenzial der Unternehmen reduzieren. Daher gehen die Unternehmen stärker dazu über, Kostenmanagement als permanentes Erschließen von Kos-tensenkungspotenzialen zu verstehen. 2. Neben der Betrachtung der Kostenseite müssen sich die Unternehmen auch laufend auf der Erlösseite mit der Konkurrenz auseinandersetzen. Die Entwicklung und Einführung neuer Produkte ist für Unternehmen eine wesentliche Voraussetzung zur Sicherung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit. Grundsätzlich stehen die Unternehmen hier vor zwei Alternativen. Sie können einerseits versuchen, als Pionier einen neuen Markt zu kreieren. Ziel dieser Strategie ist es, von Vorteilen zu profitieren, die mit der Pionierrolle in Verbindung gebracht werden. Andererseits besteht für Unternehmen die Option, der Konkurrenz bewusst die Position des Ersten im Markt zu überlassen, um als Folger in den Markt einzutreten. Risiken, die für Pionierunternehmen bestehen, sollen dadurch vermieden und Chancen, die Folgerunternehmen zugewiesen werden, sollen dadurch genutzt werden. Die vorliegenden Beiträge setzen sich mit zwei zentralen Fragestellungen dieser Kosten- und Erlösperspektive auseinander. Konkret werden zum einen Faktoren herausgearbeitet, die für eine erfolgreiche Umsetzung des Kostenmanagements relevant sind. Zum anderen wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob die Pionierrolle tatsächlich ein Erfolgsfaktor beim Markteintritt ist. Gemeinsam ist daher den Beiträgen, dass konzeptionell wie auch empirisch Einflussfaktoren bestimmt werden, die für die Durchführung eines effektiven Kostenmanagements und einer Neuprodukteinführung verantwortlich sind und dadurch direkt oder indirekt einen Einfluss auf den gesamten Unternehmenserfolg ausüben. Als Basis für die jeweilige empirische Untersuchung dienen dazu zwei umfassende Überblicksartikel, die eine Bestandsaufnahme und kritische Würdigung der bisherigen Forschungsergebnisse bieten und zukünftige Forschungsfelder aufzeigen. Die beiden empirischen Beiträge greifen jeweils darauf aufbauend verschiedene aufgezeigte Probleme der existierenden empirischen Forschung auf und leisten einen Beitrag zu den herausgearbeiteten zukünftigen Forschungsfeldern.
