Die Heterarchie wird als Idealtyp einer sich selbststeuernden, polyzentrischen Organisation aufgefaßt, die über die Fähigkeit verfügt, eine spontan hervorgebrachte, problemorientierte Struktur auszubilden, in der das verteilte Wissen der Organisation auch ad hoc zusammengeführt werden kann. Eine solche Organisation erlangt herausragende Bedeutung bei der Koordination interpersonaler Lern- und Innovationsprozesse. Aufbauend auf einem machtbasierten Verständnis von Führung, untersucht der Beitrag zentrale Ansatzpunkte für eine veränderte Konzeption von Führung in heterarchischen Organisationen. Diese gibt die Idee der zentralen Führung zugunsten eines Ansatzes auf, der Führung als das Ergebnis eines wechselseitigen, demokratischen sozialen Austauschprozesses begreift. Konkrete Vorschläge werden für eine rationale Konfliktbewältigung, eine flukturierende Führerschaft und eine dezentrale kulturelle Führung unterbreitet.
