Fremdsprachenkenntnisse als wichtige Zusatzqualifikation im Dienstleistungssektor
Nach Daten des Europäischen Haushaltspanels (ECHP) und des Sozio-oekonomischen Panels (SOEP) benötigt im Durchschnitt etwa jeder fünfte Erwerbstätige in Europa eine Fremdsprache am Arbeitsplatz. Bei den ausländischen Erwerbstätigen mit der Nationalität eines der Mitgliedstaaten sind es fast zwei Drittel. Die Fremdsprachennutzung beschränkt sich heute nicht mehr allein auf Führungskräfte, Ingenieure und Wissenschaftler, sondern wird auch von kaufmännischen Fachkräften erwartet. Besondere Bedeutung hat sie im Bereich der Dienstleistungen, wo idealerweise die Sprache des Kunden gesprochen werden sollte. In der Gastronomie bzw. im Hotelbereich geben überdurchschnittlich viele Arbeitnehmer an, eine Fremdsprache am Arbeitsplatz zu nutzen (28 %); im gesamten Dienstleistungssektor sind es 24 %. Hier ist auch der Anteil der Erwerbstätigen mit einem niedrigen Bildungsniveau hoch. Es zeigt sich, dass Fremdsprachenkenntnisse auch für Niedrigqualifizierte eine wichtige Zusatzqualifikation sind, die vor Arbeitslosigkeit schützt. Umgekehrt können fehlende Fremdsprachenkenntnisse auch im Niedrigeinkommensbereich eine Barriere für die Rückkehr in die Erwerbstätigkeit darstellen.
