Funding Health Initiatives Through Crowdfunding : A Preliminary Analysis
Crowdfunding involves raising money from large groups of individuals (the "crowd"), often through the use of websites dedicated to this purpose (Bellaflamme et al., 2014). In particular, crowdfunding allows founders of for-profit, artistic, and cultural ventures to fund their efforts by drawing on relatively small contributions from a relatively large number of individuals using the internet, without standard financial intermediaries (Mollick, 2014). Crowdfunding campaigns aimed at raising money to pay for expenses related to receiving medical treatment are receiving increased media attention and there is evidence that medical crowdfunding websites are heavily used (Otero, 2015; Snyder et al., 2016). In this sense, Snyder et al. (2016) highlight that in April 2016 the crowdfunding platform YouCaring had 15,880 active medical campaigns. Crowdfunding is raising interest all over the world due to its ability to raise funds for different kind of projects. However, the role of crowdfunding in raising money for healthcare projects or initiatives is still underexplored in academia. Through an exploratory case study-based analysis, this work aims to explore the actual use of crowdfunding in the health sector both in the case in which it is used by patient that in the case in which it is used by healthcare providers. The relevance and innovativeness of this work is related to the fact that this new and emerging healthcare funding approaches may represent a viable integration to traditional healthcare funding schemes
