Jan Schnellenbach, Universität Heidelberg, diskutiert, neben den Konstruktionsfehlern des Bailouts, auch seine Auswirkungen auf die weitere institutionelle Entwicklung der Europäischen Union: "Die Entwicklung könnte in Richtung einer formalen Institutionalisierung des bündischen Prinzips in der Haushaltspolitik in Europa gehen, etwa durch einen ausgebauten supranationalen Finanzausgleich." Markus C. Kerber, Technische Universität Berlin, wendet sich gegen eine Währungsunion mit Finanzausgleich. Thomas Apolte, Universität Münster, sieht die Beistandspolitik der EU nicht als alternativlos an. Seiner Ansicht nach fehlt jeder Nachweis dafür, dass die Umschuldung eines Landes innerhalb der EU andere Länder zwingend in einen Strudel reißen müsste.
