Nos encontramos ante una nueva edición de la Psicología de las multitudes de Gustave Le Bon, precedida de un estudio preliminar del catedrático de Derecho del Trabajo y de la Seguridad Social de la Universidad de Granada José Luis Monereo Péreztitulado ««La era de las masas»: el pensamiento socio-político de Gustave Le Bon«. Monereo considera a Le Bon «uno de los fundadores principales de la psicología social». Refleja su influjo en diversas orientaciones ideológicas contrapuestas y examina los fundamentos y supuestos ideológicos y políticos como base de su pensamiento sociológico y político-social. La obra de Gustave Le Bon que nos ocupa está determinada por la capacidad de concreción y un estilo casi «poético«. En un escueto «prefacio« presenta y justifica su trabajo, partiendo del papel fundamental de la muchedumbre organizada en la vida de los pueblos. En la introducción, Le Bon reflexiona sobre la era de las muchedumbres y la evolución de la edad actual, presentando las grandes revoluciones como una consecuencia de la modificación de las ideas, concepciones y creencias. La significación más definida, desde el punto de vista histórico, de las masas ha sido su acción destructora sobre las civilizaciones antiguas. Sin embargo, aunque existen muchedumbres criminales, también hay otras virtuosas y heroicas. Estructura Le Bon su trabajo en tres libros que divide, a su vez, en capítulos. En el primero, se detiene en el alma de las muchedumbres, examinando, en primer lugar, sus características generales y la ley psicológica de su unidad mental. Seguidamente, profundiza en los sentimientos y en la moralidad de las muchedumbres, recogiendo cinco caracteres fundamentales de las mismas: la impulsividad, movilidad e irritabilidad; la sugestibilidad y credulidad; la exageración y el simplismo de sentimientos; la intolerancia, el autoritarismo y el conservadurismo y su moralidad. Las ideas, los razonamientos y la imaginación de las muchedumbres constituyen el núcleo argumental del siguiente capítulo, concluyendo con la consideración de que todas las convicciones de las muchedumbres revisten una indiscutible forma religiosa. En el segundo libro, Le Bon presta atención a las opiniones y creencias de las muchedumbres, analizando los factores remotos que determinan las mismas: la raza, las tradiciones, el tiempo, las instituciones y la educación. A continuación, se ocupa de los factores inmediatos de dichas opiniones: las imágenes, las palabras y las fórmulas; las ilusiones, la experiencia y la razón. Nos presenta la figura de los agitadores de muchedumbres, así como sus medios de persuasión y su particular psicología, partiendo de que todos los seres que viven en colectividad tienen una necesidad instintiva de obedecer a un jefe, que en las muchedumbres humanas sería un agitador cuya acción se basa en tres elementos, afirmación, repetición y contagio, aunque, lo que realmente permite alcanzar poder a las ideas propagadas por estos elementos es el prestigio que adquieren. Finalmente, se detiene en los límites del cambio de creencias y opiniones de las muchedumbres, distinguiendo entre las grandes creencias permanentes que duran siglos, y sobre las cuales descansa una civilización entera y que una vez arraigadas, adquieren un poder invencible y las opiniones momentáneas y variables que nacen y mueren en una época y se caracterizan por su movilidad. En el tercer y último libro, Le Bon establece la clasificación y descripción de las muchedumbres. Distingue, en primer término, las heterogéneas (anónimas o no anónimas) y las homogéneas (sectas, castas y clases). Profundiza en muchedumbres concretas como las criminales, los jurados, las muchedumbres electorales y las asambleas parlamentarias.
