History’s Choke-Hold : An Epilogue or Five Years Since

This analytical review covers macroeconomic and social developments across the post-socialist economies of Central and Eastern Europe and Former Soviet Union (CEE and FSU) between 2018 and 2023. The emphasis is on historical continuity given the mix of the latest global and regional shocks. This discussion builds on the material found in the earlier published Transition Economies: Transformation, Development, and Society in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union (Routledge, 2018). The current situation is dynamic and volatile. The overall characterization is that of accumulation of regional and global political risks, accompanied by the latest transformation of the macroeconomic structures, rising social and economic underdevelopment, supply chains repositioning, and capital and foreign exchange markets pressures. History’s choke-hold, especially on the fates of the smallest CEE and FSU economies, seems to be inescapable
