Improving Primary Education in Nigeria Through Quality Control

Most developing countries of the world, particularly sub Sahara Africa, depend very much on the educational system as a means of transforming the socio-economic lives of their people. Nigeria, as a developing nation is no exception. The purpose of all the educational system such as the 6-5-4-, and the present 9-3-4 system of Nigeria education were framed and designed to achieve this purpose i.e. transforming the lives of the people. In the process of transforming the socio-economic lives of the peoples through education, the primary education school level is the first level in the realization of the lofty goals of the education system. Therefore, the extent to which primary education in Nigeria achieves the purposes for the total growth and socio-economic development of the individual depends very much on the degree of quality control taking place in the primary schools. Put in another way, the degree of success that is achieved from a school programme depends upon the quality of the teaching which goes on in the school. This paper therefore, seeks to examine the concept of quality control in primary education, it will also discuss the need for quality control in primary education, finally; the paper proffers suggestions of giving primary education a face-lift in order to achieve quality at this foundation of education in Nigeria
