Purpose – Looks at why companies that continue to pour money into innovation, while seemingly unhappy with the returns the investments are yielding, are equally unclear on how to do a better job of turning ideas and innovations into profits. Design/methodology/approach – This briefing is prepared by an independent writer. Findings – Innovation is hard to measure. However, despite the many uncertainties of innovation, it is possible to assess, at the outset, the likely impact of different approaches to managing the full innovation‐to‐cash process. Originality/value – Looks at the importance of metrics for determining the effects of innovation.
