Kann eine monetäre Schätzgleichung zur Verbesserung der Geldpolitik beitragen? Kommentar zum Aufsatz von E. Langfeldt Langfeldt ermittelt eine Schätzfunktion, die die Veränderung der letzten inländischen Verwendung von Gütern und Dienstleistungen (preisbereinigt) aus der Veränderung der Geldmenge und dem Preisauftrieb erklärt. Zwar besteht die Schätzfunktion alle gängigen ökonometrischen Tests, aber da die Veränderung der Zielgröße sehr stark von der Entwicklung der erklärenden Variablen in der selben Periode abhängt, kann die prognostische Leistung des Modells nicht viel besser sein als die prognostische Treffsicherheit für diese zwei Variablen (wobei freilich die eine [M 1] als eine bis zu einem gewissen Grade wirtschaftspolitisch beeinflußbare Größe aufgefaßt werden kann). Im Lichte des dem Modell zugrundegelegten theoretischen Ansatzes und angesichts einer langfristig eher abnehmenden Umlaufgeschwindigkeit des Geldes ist Langfeldts Modellspezifikation mit konstantem Glied schwer interpretierbar: Er ermittelt für den Niveaukoeffizienten einen Wert, der signifikant von Null abweicht und ein autonomes Wachstum von 3'/%,% impliziert. Für die achtziger Jahre würde kaum jemand die autonomen Wachstumskräfte der westdeutschen Wirtschaft so hoch ansetzen; somit scheint der Schluß unausweichlich zu sein, daß das Modell die wachstumsbremsende Wirkung restriktiver geldpolitischer Maßnahmen eher unterschätzen. müßte. Aber auch Langfeldts Spezifikation führt eindringlich genug vor Augen, daß die Wiederherstellung der Preisstabilität durch monetäre Restriktion drastisch negative und langanhaltende Auswirkungen auf Wachstum und Beschäftigung hat. In diesem Sinne ist Langfeldts Schätzgleichung als ein Beitrag zur Verbesserung der Geldpolitik anzusehen: als eine Warnung vor monetaristischen Experimenten.
