L’investissement joue à 'cash-cash'
La rentabilité des entreprises s’est nettement redressée en 2003 et 2004. Amorcée aux États-Unis l’année dernière, la croissance des profits a cependant gagné l’Europe avec un temps de retard. Alors que la rentabilité semble avoir atteint un pic outre-Atlantique au troisième trimestre 2004, elle se poursuit avec vigueur en Europe qui devrait rattraper, puis dépasser à la fin 2004, les États-Unis. L’effet du cycle de productivité, plus précoce aux États-Unis du fait d’une reprise antérieure à celle de l’Europe, explique ce ciseau. Le rebond du taux d’investissement productif entamé au début de l’année 2003 aux États-Unis n’est pas encore visible dans la zone euro. Cependant, même aux États-Unis, les profits augmentent plus rapidement que l’investissement. Les taux d’autofinancement s’améliorent donc de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique, ce qui explique le moindre recours des SNF au financement externe. Les entreprises utilisent une part importante de leurs liquidités au désendettement, à la distribution de dividendes ou au rachat d’actions. En contrepartie, la qualité de la dette des sociétés s’est fortement améliorée, réduisant les primes de risque et encourageant l’offre de crédit bancaire à des coûts de plus en plus faibles. Cette position attentiste des entreprises profite plus aux marchés obligataires, rassurés par la diminution des risques, qu’aux marchés d’actions pénalisés en 2004 par la hausse des prix du pétrole et le manque de projets d’investissements. La sous-évaluation des cours boursiers européens, au regard des profits dégagés par les entreprises, et l’abondance de liquidités pourraient conduire à des opérations de rachat et à une augmentation de la valorisation boursière des marchés. L’augmentation de la capitalisation boursière faciliterait alors la croissance de l’investissement.
