Les principales causes de la dégradation des écosystèmes et de la crise annoncée de la biodiversité sont désormais bien identifiées ; présentées le plus souvent en cinq catégories (GBO3, 2010) : destruction, dégradation et transformation des habitats ; surexploitation des ressources naturelles ; pollutions des milieux ; espèces invasives ; changement climatique.
