Le vieillissement démographique sera plus rapide au Sud qu’au Nord
La population mondiale vieillit : la part des adultes et des personnes âgées augmente et celle des jeunes diminue. Ce phénomène est lié à la diminution de la taille des familles et à l'allongement de la durée de vie. Il est inéluctable, à moins d'un retour à la famille nombreuse d'autrefois, inconcevable à long terme car il entraînerait une croissance démographique illimitée. Le vieillissement démographique touche toute la planète, mais il est plus ou moins avancé selon les pays. Dans ceux du Sud, il n'en est souvent qu'à ses débuts mais devrait prendre une grande importance dans les prochaines décennies. Il s'y déroulera plus rapidement que dans ceux du Nord. En Chine, par exemple, la proportion de personnes âgées de 65 ans ou plus devrait passer de 7 % à 14 % en seulement 25 ans, et au Vietnam, en 17 ans, alors que le même doublement a pris plus de cent ans en France.
