Les vacances des enfants
Toulemon Laurent and Villeneuve-Gokalp Catherine. ? Schoolchildren's vacations. In total, French schoolchildren enjoy four months of holidays per year. Where and with whom do they spend these holidays ? A survey on how school vacations are organized was carried out in 1981, by INED and CERC with technical assistance by INSEE, on a sample of 6,000 schoolchildren under the age of 16. Three quarters of children went on vacation at least once a year, but 86 per cent stayed at home during for more than half their holidays. 25 per cent of children aged eight or older spend at least some days at home alone, or with only younger brothers and sisters, when the mother is employed. Women who work outside the home say that it is most difficult to find someone to look after their children during the school holidays. 47 per cent ask grandmothers to help, 18 per cent use support groups; alternatively they leave their children at home on their own. The different solutions they adopt reflect the different ways in which they combine their domestic tasks with their career.
