Mitigation on Self-Discharge Behavior in Supercapacitors Via Hierarchical Formation of Nickel-Sulfide Heterostructure on Cuo Scaffold and its Application to Efficient Renewable-Energy Conversion
Supercapacitors (SCs) are actively researched as one of viable alternatives to supply power to miniaturized IoT devices owing to instant charging, high energy density, long stability, and high durability. However, securing electrode materials, which fulfill both benefits of SCs and persistence of charged potential for a comparatively prolonged duration, is still elusive. Herein, a heterostructure of CuO (CO) and Ni 3 S 2 (NS) via optimized overcoating is presented, exhibiting a threefold improvement in the essential electrochemical characteristics and mitigation of self-discharge via nanostructural modification. Self-discharge during the operation of SCs and its behind mechanism are systematically investigated via morphological and nanostructural evolution. Moreover, after charging SC assembly with a solar cell, decent performance, endorsed via various demonstrations from ‘a red LED illumination for 35 min’ to ‘simultaneous illumination for 22 LEDs’, is accomplished, along with the operation of digital thermo-hygrometer. Surprisingly, symmetric supercapacitors (SSCs), with 20 cycled NS on CO, display the ability to retain 60% of the charged potential repeatedly with marginal loss, even after the 4 consecutive sessions of GCD-VH-SD for 16 hours test. In addition, an outstanding cycling behavior over 7500 cycles (~5% loss) suggests that the materials and device configuration are expected to contribute to the enhancement of reliability in the next generation SCs
