Ne samo ekonomsko, nego visoko obrazovanje u cjelini, kao i teorija i praksa sveučilišta, prošli su dug evolucijski proces od Platonove Akademije do Humboldtove ideje humanističkog sveučilišta pa sve do Bolonjskog procesa i njegove suvremene kritike. Ova evolucija od antičke i prosvjetiteljske ideje znanja i sveučilišta pa sve do suvremenih kontroverznih neoliberalnih ideja i iskustava „privatizacije i komercijalizacije“ visokog obrazovanja uvijek je zrcalila društveno razvojne konfl ikte i dileme. Sustav i ideja obrazovanja evoluirali su od principa socijalne pravednosti i univerzalnog prava na obrazovanje kao temeljnog ljudskog prava do znanja „kao robe“ i takozvanog „poduzetničkog sveučilišta“ čiji se rezultati mjere komercijalnim i ekonomskim kategorijama. Analiza pozitivnih i negativnih učinaka tih procesa nužna je ne samo zbog akademskih nego i zbog praktičnih razloga daljnjeg razvoja sveučilišne prakse i posebno buduće pozicije ekonomskog obrazovanja i napose posljedica na društvene procese i promjene. Globalna i lokalna gospodarska kriza, veliki fiskalni defi citi i javni dugovi, potiču javne vlasti da traže rješenje u privatizaciji visokog obrazovanja (ili njihovih dijelova) čime žele smanjiti javni trošak obrazovanja. Taj proces ima veoma različite, često neizvjesne društvene posljedice za sveučilišta i fakultete, studente i njihove roditelje, porezne obveznike i građane i općenito na gospodarski i društveni razvoj zajednice. Zadnjih godina, kao reakcija na ove procese, jačaju globalni pokreti i ideje koje se protive utjecaju trenutne gospodarske krize na obrazovne sustave, jačanje utjecaja tržišta na obrazovanje, smanjenje sredstava za javno obrazovanje, diskriminaciji i isključivanju pojedinih socijalnih skupina iz sustava obrazovanja, odnosno koje se zalažu za obrazovanje kao ljudsko pravo koje treba biti javno dobro i služiti javnom interesu te koje mora omogućiti akademske slobode i slobodan izbor znanstvene discipline. Procesi globalizacije, kako god taj pojam bio defi niran, unose velike promjene u sve segmente suvremenog društva i bitstva čovjeka pa tako i u visoko obrazovanje. Globalizacija i liberalizacija rezultirali su redistribucijom bogatstva od siromašnih zemalja i pojedinaca ka bogatima. Neoliberalni konsenzus nije omogućio, unatoč svom obećanju, porast individualnih sloboda nego ih je smanjio uvodeći kulturu „pobjednici uzimaju sve“. Politizacija i ekonomizacija sveučilišta sve više fokus usmjerava na stvari i bogatstvo a ne na ljude. Najčešće defi nicije moderne ideje društva znanja, sveučilište i obrazovanje opasno reduciraju na kategorije ponude i potražnje. Znanje na kojem se sve više inzistira svodi se na „prodaju“ znanja i vještina bez razumijevanja a to je u svojoj biti smrt znanja i posebno smrt „mišljenja i razumijevanja“. Time se u uvjetima globalizacije i liberalizacije učvršćuje elitistička pozicija bogatih nasuprot mnoštva siromašnih, obespravljenih i isključenih koji nepovratno gube mogućnost ostvarenja boljeg života. Ti procesi imaju za rezultat daljnje raslojavanje i porast društvenih napetosti a na tim se osnovama ne može graditi dobro društvo. Nije sporno da obrazovanje i znanost imaju ekonomske funkcije, da obrazovanje pridonosi gospodarskom rastu i razvoju. Ali u dobrom društvu to nije i ne može ostati jedina svrha i cilj obrazovanja i znanja. Pored gospodarske funkcije, obrazovanje i znanje u dobrom društvu imaju i druge funkcije; da ljudima omoguće da upravljaju samim sobom te da istinski uživaju u životu. Svaki pojedinac ima pravo na ideju ostvarenja svog životnog sna, na ideju da sutra živi bolje i nitko nema pravo da ga u tome spriječi, dapače u društvu kao kolektivu pojedinaca, obveza je da se međusobno u tome pomažu. To je društvena harmonija. Dakle, obrazovanje povećava sposobnost pojedinca i društva, odnosno služi obogaćivanju života i uživanju u njemu. Nezamjenjiva društvena funkcija obrazovanja jest da omogući demokraciju, što znači kvalitetniju suradnju među ljudima i narodima. Istinska demokracija nije moguća bez obrazovanih građana. Puno je lakše upravljati neobrazovanim građanima kojima je strano mišljenje i postavljanje pitanja zašto. Zbog toga su totalitarni i nedemokratski sustavi sve činili da se građani ne obrazuju, odnosno da unutar svoje logike razvijaju obrazovanje samo za elitu koja upravlja, odnosno da građanima omoguće ideologizirano i sadržajno neslobodno obrazovanje koje je u funkciji apologije vladajućeg sustava. Važan kriterij dobrog društva je upravo njegova sposobnost da fi nancira i razvije javni sustav obrazovanja za sve svoje građane, odnosno da se izbori protiv najgoreg oblika diskriminacije a to je diskriminacija u šansama za obrazovanje koje čine temelj za napredak pojedinca i društva. Suvremeno hrvatsko društvo stoji pred velikim izazovom da se odupre ideji elitizma i nepravde, da se odupre ideji pretvaranja znanja u element funkcije proizvodnje i tržišne razmjene odnosno da se izbori za znanje kao faktor razvoja ali i širenja ljudske slobode u najširem smislu. To je ujedno put koji vodi razvoju demokracije i razvoju dobrog društva.
