Organic Sector Increase and Impacts on Sustainable Development – A Myth or a Reality?

Nowadays the whole world is standing on the threshold of a new era inspired by the goals of sustainable development as a result of raising human consciousness about planet and people in the perspective of future generations interlinked with assuring current healthy and safe living environment. The question if those priorities will be accomplished is dependent on taking the right directions and detailed planning activities. Future development depends on what extent humanity will achieve the optimal balance between economic, social and ecologic effectiveness threatened by the negative trends of climatic changes, irrational use of natural resources, water and soil pollution, decreasing biodiversity and violated landscapes which are among the most commented and interconnected problems from the ecological point of view. Strong demographic problems, social inequalities and increasing poverty are the other side. However, economic problems stand on the basis of ecological and social problems that require radical changes in all the sectors, but with special accents in the production one. Agriculture is a main economic activity because of providing necessary food and products for human existence. In the process of its development agriculture, as a branch at the very beginning of food and non-food products' chains, reflects historical, cultural and social values of human kind. Recently, the focus is on sustainable agriculture which integrates three main objectives – healthy environment, economic effectiveness and social justice. Organic agriculture is a sustainable production method based on an overall systematic approach embracing the whole production cycle.
