Perspektiven für die langfristige Entwicklung von Nahrungsmittelmärkten

Die Weltbevölkerung könnte - einer Prognose der United Nations zufolge - bis zum Jahr 2030 um rund 40% zunehmen. Ob die Produktion von Nahrungsmittelrohstoffen mit der wachsenden Weltbevölkerung Schritt halten kann oder ob Engpässe auf einzelnen Märkten zu erwarten sind, zählt zu den wichtigen Zukunftsfragen von globaler Bedeutung. Wird die kontinuierliche Nachfrageexpansion zu Preisexplosionen für Nahrungsmittelrohstoffe führen? Die vorliegende Studie geht der Frage nach, wie sich Angebot und Nachfrage auf den Märkten für Nahrungsmittelrohstoffe bis zum Jahr 2030 entwickeln werden. Zudem werden die historischen Entwicklungen und die zu erwartenden (Preis-)Trends für ausgewählte Nahrungsmittel analysiert. Konkret sind dies Getreide, Ölsaaten, Kaffee, Kakao und Zucker. Die gesamte Nahrungsmittelnachfrage und ihre strukturelle Zusammensetzung werden sich innerhalb der nächsten 25 Jahre aufgrund demographischer und wirtschaftlicher Faktoren erheblich verändern. In zahlreichen Regionen der Welt wird in Folge eines hohen Einkommenswachstums der Kalorienverbrauch pro Kopf bis zum Jahr 2030 deutlich steigen. Bei gleichzeitig hohem Bevölkerungswachstum wird es damit zu einem stark wachsenden Bedarf an Nahrungsmittelrohstoffen kommen. Im Zuge dieser Entwicklung wird die relative Bedeutung von Getreide für die Ernährung zurückgehen und der durchschnittliche Pro-Kopf-Konsum von Fleisch zunehmen. Damit wird der Bedarf an Produktionsfaktoren für den Anbau von Nahrungsmittelrohstoffen erheblich steigen. Dabei sind neben der menschlichen Arbeitskraft und Kapital insbesondere Boden und Wasser von Bedeutung. Unter Abwägung der Trends für Nachfrage und Angebot auf den Märkten für Nahrungsmittel kommt die Studie zu dem Schluss, dass bis zum Jahr 2030 keine globalen und dauerhaften Engpässe bei der Produktion zu erwarten sind. Boden und Wasser sind in ausreichendem Maße vorhanden, um die Produktion von Nahrungsmitteln weiter auszudehnen. Zudem gibt es erhebliche Potentiale zur Erhöhung der Effizienz des Anbaus und damit zu einer Steigerung der Wasser- und Bodenproduktivität. Unter diesen Bedingungen werden die Preise für Nahrungsmittelrohstoffe im langfristigen Trend nur geringfügig steigen. Dennoch kann es auch zukünftig zu kurzfristigen Engpässen auf den Märkten für bestimmte Nahrungsmittelrohstoffe kommen. So können Ernteausfälle, Spekulation und Nachfrageveränderungen dazu führen, dass es zeitweise zu erheblichen Preissteigerungen kommt.
