Risk society and the governance of innovation in Europe: opening the black box?
The point of departure for this paper is that it is desirable to complement the economically oriented theoretical perspectives of innovation studies with other streams of social science within wider issues, including the risk society and new modes of governance, as they have an impact on the performance and patterns of the innovation system. The paper discusses current attempts to govern industrial and technological innovation in the European Union and examines the ways in which the institutions and procedures being devised to assess and manage technological risk are responding to emerging risk perceptions and participatory claims.
