Role of Urban Cooperative Banks in the Changing Business Environment

The UCBs are expected to serve the middle class wage earners, small entrepreneurs and business people residing in urban and semi-urban areas. These banks may not expect the patronage of rich people, big business establishments and big industrialist as in the case of commercial banks. Further the UCBs are compared with their counterpart have more moral responsibility and ethical binding to serve the weaker section. Today, UCBs operate in a highly competitive market, on a level playing field with commercial banks. They do so, successfully applying the cooperative principles underlying their business model. Owned by members, their primary mission is to offer them the best services, as opposed to maximizing profit to shareholders. The UCBs in our country have a larger role to play in the liberalized business environment
