Some Models and Evidences on the Coexistence between For-Profit and Not-for-Profit Hospitals in the Brazilian National Health System

This work shows some aspects of the relation between for-profits and nonprofits hospitals in the realm of the Brazilian National Health System (SUS). We emphasize the for-profit and not-for-profit orientations of the hospitals rather than focusing on the usual private versus public dichotomy. By doing so we are able to develop models of how for-profit and not-for-profit react to incentives through choices regarding quantity and quality of services. This approach allows us to assess the results of ownership-induced differences in hospital mortality rates within the SUS
