Sozial- und wirtschaftshistorische Aspekte des Zypern-Einsatzes des österreichischen Bundesheeres
Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt im wesentlichen die Beteiligung des österreichischen Bundesheeres an dem UN-Friedenseinsatz auf Zypern (UNFICYP) von seinen Anfängen bis zum Ende mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der sozial und wirtschaftshistorischen Aspekte. Zu Beginn der Arbeit wird ein kurzer und prägnanter Einblick über die Geschichte der Vereinten Nationen und ihrer Entstehung gegeben. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch der Weg Österreichs in die Vereinten Nationen und welchen Platz Österreich in der Staatengemeinschaft einnimmt, beleuchtet. Um einen besseren Einblick über diese Thematik zu bekommen und optimal in die Materie eintauchen zu können, was man unter einer „friedenserhaltende Mission“ verstehen kann, wird dieser Begriff sehr ausführlich und verständlich auf den folgenden Seiten erklärt. Im Anschluss daran wird auf die Fragen der Organisation von friedenserhaltenden Operationen eingegangen. In aller kürze werden Fragen der Rekrutierung und Zusammensetzung von UN-Truppen, des Abzugs von Kontingenten, des Kommandos, der Einsatzkosten, der disziplinären Maßnahmen und der Strafgerichtsbarkeit erläutert. Bevor es zu dem eigentlichen Thema dieser Arbeit kommt wird noch ein kurzer Blick über die historische Entwicklung der Friedensmissionen und der ersten Friedenseinsätze der Vereinten Nationen gegeben. Das zentrale Thema dieser Arbeit ist, neben der historischen Aufarbeitung der Beteiligung des österreichischen Bundesheeres, die Beleuchtung der sozialen Aspekte des UN-Einsatzes Bezug nehmend auf das österreichische Sanitätskontingent. Eine Besonderheit dieser Arbeit ist nicht nur die objektive Sichtweise von bereits aufbereiteten Daten, Fakten und Zahlen, sondern auch die Einbringung von subjektiven Eindrücken, Erfahrungen, Meinungen und Sichtweisen von einzelnen Offizieren und Chargen, die auf Zypern dienten. Sehr persönlich geführte Interviews erlauben einen tiefen Einblick in das Leben vor Ort ,ergänzen und erklären historische Begebenheiten. Oft von Medien und Außenstehenden als „holidaysoldiers“ bezeichnet, berichten die Augenzeugen von Erlebnissen die diesen Behauptungen fast zur Gänze widersprechen; jedem einsatzbereiten Soldaten war im Grunde bewusst, dass er seinen Einsatz für den Frieden, mit seinem Leben bezahlen könnte.
