The Development of Soviet Imports
The chief function of Soviet imports is to promote our economic development. Imports, plus internal resources, ensure supplies of equipment, raw mate. rials and consumer goods which we produce in ade quate quantity, and also those which can be obtained in other countries more rapidly or at less cost than if they were produced at home. Soviet foreign trade is a major medium of economic cooperation with other countries; it strengthens peace and promotes friendship between peoples. The concrete aims, trends and commodity pattern of foreign trade, and especially of Soviet imports, has changed at the various stages of our country's development, depending on the requirements of its national economy.
