The Relationship between Perceived Family Support and Physical Abuse Among Married Women : A Case Study of Harare, Zimbabwe
Physical abuse continues to be a substantial problem and a growing concern for married women and those who care for them in Zimbabwe and across the globe. However studies on it have been limited. Zimbabwe demographic and Health Survey, (2005 -2006) acknowledged that an analysis based on a sub-sample of 80 married women who were interviewed during the survey and had experienced physical abuse years preceding the survey was carried out using Betty Newman’s systems model with a descriptive correlation method to determine the relationship between perceived family support and physical abuse among married women. The results of the survey showed a high level of physical abuse and only 1.3% of the selected sample had a high level of perceived family support. The level of abuse varied with background, location as well as socio-economic variables. The findings of this survey had implications on designing appropriate national programmes on reproductive health, mental health as well as physical health policies for reducing the incidence of physical abuse among married women in Zimbabwe
