We develop a valuation model based on conservation rules, and stochastic prices and inventories. Dynamic programming determines the optimal harvest amount. A hedge portfolio based on a resource reserve is proposed. The optimal size of the reserve is determined, as well as its value.

Grower discontent with tournaments as mechanisms for settling poultry contracts can largely be attributed to the group composition risk that tournaments impose on growers. This paper focuses on the welfare effects of a widely advocated regulatory proposal to prevent integrator companies from...

The volatility of St. Louis cash corn bids by day-of-the-week is examined for the period September 1992 through August 1999. Thursday to Friday, Friday to Monday and Friday to Tuesday (with a holiday on Monday) price changes tend to be larger than other day-to-day changes.

The U.S. live hog production has undergone a significant structural change characterized by a trend toward larger operations. Experts argue that there is a cost advantage for larger farms due to industrialization and increased management intensity. One important element in production, mainly for...

This paper investigates, through a dynamic stochastic adjustment model the extent to which an active agricultural policy can be the source of volatility in agricultural investment. It is shown that noise in formulation of agricultural policy has adverse effects even in cases where earlier...

Using longitudinal panel farm-level data, this study finds that income variability may be materially influenced by farm size. Econometric results suggest that policy analyses and other considerations of the distributional effects of, and response to, income variability for commercial scale...

Estimates of the joint value of the timing and location options in the corn futures contract on the CBOT are obtained by using a multinomial diffusion process. The estimated option values will be used in a model to explain basis behavior on the first day of the maturity month.

This paper presents a decomposed Poisson regression model based on count data that evaluates the size distribution, the changing number of flour mills for each size class, and the concentration of market power, simultaneously. This model also allows us to test dominant price leadership model.

Six depreciation methods were used to simulate the value of farm tractors with indexed and expected prices. Accuracy of simulated values was evaluated using paired t-tests of mean absolute percentage errors and forecast accuracy regression models. Results varied with age and use. Some...

Stochastic frontier analysis is used to determine the relative efficiency of firms in the food industry in industrialized countries. Using panel data analysis, the firm-specific factors, firm-size, the corporate tax rate and number of years of operation and country-specific effects as potential...
