A simple, analytically solvable Chamberlinian agglomeration model
Pflüger, Michael
-
2001
This paper presents a simple, analytically solvable Chamberlinian agglomeration model. As in the canonical core-periphery (CP) model, two agglomerative forces are at work. However, the present model exhibits a "pitchfork bifurcation" rather than the "tomahawk bifurcation" of the CP model.

Regional policy evaluation : interactive fixed effects and synthetic controls
Gobillon, Laurent
;
Magnac, Thierry
-
2013
In this paper, we investigate the use of interactive effect or linear factor models in regional policy evaluation. We contrast treatment effect estimates obtained by Bai (2009)'s least squares method with the popular difference in difference estimates as well as with estimates obtained using...

Economic geography of contagion: a study on COVID-19 outbreak in India
Chakraborty, Tanika
;
Mukherjee, Anirban
-
2021
We propose a regional inequality-based mechanism to explain the heterogeneity in the spread of Covid-19 and test it using data from India. We argue that a core-periphery economic structure is likely to increase the spread of infection because it involves movement of goods and people across the...

Bright investments : measuring the impact of transport infrastructure using luminosity data in Haiti
Mitnik, Oscar A.
;

;
Yañez-Pagans, Patricia
-
2018
This paper quantifies the impacts of transport infrastructure investments on economic activity in Haiti, using satellite night-light luminosity as a proxy measure. Our identification strategy exploits the differential timing of rehabilitation projects across various road segments of the primary...

The complexity of economic policy : I. Restricted local optima in tax policy design
Saint-Paul, Gilles
-
2002
Economists traditionally tackle normative problems by computing optimal policy, i.e. the one that maximizes a social welfare function. In practice, however, a succession of marginal changes to a limited number of policy instruments are implemented, until no further improvement is feasible. I...

Some evidence on the nature of urbanization economies
Krupka, Douglas J.
-
2009
Urbanization economies - the effects on productivity and utility created endogenously by larger cities - are a fundamental component of both the economic geography of modern societies and the perpetuation of innovation and economic growth at a national level. Cities account for vast majorities...

Comparing econometric methods to empirically evaluate job-search assistance
Muller, Paul
;
Klaauw, Bas van der
;
Heyma, Arjan
-
2017
We test whether different empirical methods give different results when evaluating job-search assistance programs. Budgetary problems at the Dutch unemployment insurance (UI) administration in March 2010, caused a sharp drop in the availability of these programs. Using administrative data...
