This paper proposes a tail-truncated stochastic frontier model that allows for the truncation of technical efficiency from below. The truncation bound implies the inefficiency threshold for survival. Specifically, this paper assumes a uniform distribution of technical inefficiency and derives...

Using several independent data sets, we investigate the relationship between gender and corruption. We show using micro data that women are less involved in bribery, and are less likely to condone bribe taking. Cross-country data show that corruption is less severe where women hold a larger...

We find that tariff rates decreased less rapidly in more corrupt countries in instrumental variables (IV) estimation, using mortality rates of European settlers at the time of colonization as IV. Our finding implies that tariff rates are endogenous to corruption.

This paper proposes a flexible time-varying stochastic frontier model. Similarly to Lee and Schmidt [1993, In: Fried H, Lovell CAK, Schmidt S (eds) The measurement of productive efficiency: techniques and applications. Oxford University Press, Oxford], we assume that individual firms’...

This paper examines the role of fiscal policy in the Korean financial crisis and the subsequent recovery from it. We specifically address three questions: Was Korea’s fiscal policy prior to the crisis conservative, or were there large hidden contingent liabilities not captured in the official...

This paper employs the difference-in-differences empirical strategy and quantile regressions to analyze the effects of sorting and mixing on the academic performance of high school students in South Korea. In Korea, about half of high schools are subject to the equalization policy (EP), and must...
