In this paper, we study a one-dimensional quasi-static thermoelastic problem with unilateral contact with an elastic obstacle and heat flux through the boundary of contact. A finite element approximation is proposed and analyzed and some numerical experiments are performed.

A non-overlapping domain decomposition is applied to a multibody unilateral contact problem with given friction (Tresca’s model). Approximations are proposed on the basis of the primary variational formulation (in terms of displacements) and linear finite elements. For the discretized problem...

This paper deals with the full discretization of quasistatic 3D Signorini problems with local Coulomb friction and a coefficient of friction which may depend on the solution. After a time discretization we obtain a system of static contact problems with Coulomb friction. Each of these problems...

A discrete static contact problem with Coulomb friction is considered. The objective is to analyze non unique solutions. Since the model depends on parameters, we explore continuation (path-following) techniques for its numerical solution. In particular, we analyse a model with one and two...

Mining activities impact the nearby environment, causing the so-called mining hazards. The land subsidence phenomena caused by the dewatering of the mines are listed among the mining-induced catastrophic geohazards slowly affecting extensive areas around the opencasts. These large-scale...

India is among the top ten countries with the highest percentage of landslide fatalities for the past few years. Intense rainfall during the 2009 monsoon in the hilly district of Nilgiris, in the state of Tamilnadu in India, triggered landslides at more than 300 locations which affected road and...

In the United States, forty-eight (48) percent of the residential end-use energy consumption is spent on space heating and air conditioning. Reducing envelope-generated heating and cooling loads through application of phase change materials (PCMs) in building envelopes can enhance the energy...

Composite components of wind turbine blade are assembled with adhesive. In order to assess structural integrity of blades it is needed to investigate fracture of joints. In this study, finite element analysis based on fracture mechanics was conducted to characterize failure of adhesive joint for...

A new method for the hourly simulation of fields of long BHEs (borehole heat exchangers) is presented, in dimensionless form. The method considers also the internal structure of the BHE, with reference to double U-tube BHEs. The analytical expressions of new g-functions (time evolutions of the...

The necessity of an energy supplier was to solve an impact problem presented at the damper winding ring or short-circuit ring of a 625kVA generator and to redesign a fan for it. The principal restriction was the time. It should be done in 15 calendar days, working with drawings of the machine,...
