The purpose of this regional study is to explain the socio-economic processes of restructuring, causes and consequences which have arisen in rural Kerelian Republic in northwestern Russia.

The study examines welfare changes in China during the reform period (1978 - ) by analysing various welfare indicators, the causes of change, and the shifting models.

Two issues are of special interest: the process of economic reform in India, in historical context and comparative perspective. The second question is the medium term future of the Indian economy in the light of experience elsewhere in Asia.
