We borrow a frontier specification from the econometrics literature to make inferences about the tolerance of the tapir to human settlements. We estimate the width of an invisible band surrounding human settlements which would act as a frontier or exclusion zone to the tapir to be around 290 meters.

Why do statisticians (econometricians, economists, financial analysts, etc.) continue to incompletely identify the algebraic/geometric structure of the multi-variate data series they profess to analyze, and instead continue to publish the results of incomplete, prejudiced and biased...

This paper introduces various consistent tests for the null hypothesis of stationarity with possibly unknown multiple structural break points against the alternative of nonstationarity that can be applied to multiple as well as univariate time series. These tests can be applied to either partial...

In this paper we derive a general closed-form expression for the Bartlett correction for the test of H_0: \theta= \theta**(0), where "theta is a scalar parameter of a one-parameter exponential family model. Our results are general enough to cover many important and commonly used distributions....

This paper compares the out-of-sample forecasting accuracy of five classes of time series models for market shares of the six most important Portuguese car market competitors over differents horizons. As representative time series models I employ a random-walk with drift (Naive), a univariate...

This paper compares the empirical performance of Canadian weighted monetary aggregates (in particular, Fisher ideal aggregates) with the current summation aggregates, for their information content and forecasting performance in terms of prices, real output and nominal spending for the period...

We propose new data-driven smooth tests for a parametric regression function. The smoothing parameter is selected through a new criterion that favors a large smoothing parameter under the null hypothesis. The resulting test is adaptive rate-optimal and consistent against Pitman local...

Simulation evidence is presented on the finite sample properties of two tests for stationarity recently proposed by Kwiatkowski, Phillips and Schmidt (1991) and Park (1990). Unlike earlier unit-root tests, these test the null of stationarity against the alternative of a unit root, thereby...

We report here on the design and first application of an interactive computer-administered personal interview (CAPI) survey eliciting from high school students and college undergraduates their expectations of the income they would earn if they were to complete different levels of schooling. We...
