Rank-ordering analysis is applied to the intertimes between seismic events recorded in the Apennine belt between 40–42° N and 14–16° E from the 15th century onwards. It shows a power law capable of governing the intertimes between 1529 and 368 months and another power law which...

We introduce a simple generalization of rational bubble models which removes the fundamental problem discovered by Lux and Sornette (J. Money, Credit and Banking, preprint at http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/cond-mat/9910141) that the distribution of returns is a power law with exponent <1, in contradiction with empirical data. The idea is that the price fluctuations associated with bubbles must on average grow with the mean market return r. When r is larger than the discount rate rδ, the distribution of returns of the observable price, sum of the bubble component and of the fundamental price, exhibits an intermediate tail with an exponent which can be larger than 1. This regime r>rδ corresponds...</1,>

We report on the existing connection between power-law distributions and allometries. As it was first reported in Gomez-Lievano et al. (2012) for the relationship between homicides and population, when these urban indicators present asymptotic power-law distributions, they can also display...

We study size and growth distributions of products and business firms in the context of a given industry. Firm size growth is analyzed in terms of two basic mechanisms, i.e., the increase of the number of new elementary business units and their size growth. We find a power-law relationship...

For any crystal, the specific heat due to phonons can be written as Cph=AT3 where A is a constant and for a metal, the conduction electrons contribute a term that can be written as Cel(T)=γT. At low temperatures, however, other contributions to the specific heat may become significant. What is...

Nowadays, in societies threatened by atomization, selfishness, short-term thinking, and alienation from political life, there is a renewed debate about classical questions concerning the quality of democratic decision making. In this work a cellular automata model for the dynamics of free...

Because sports are stylized combat, sports may follow power laws similar to those found for wars, individual clashes, and acts of terrorism. We show this fact for football (soccer) by adjusting power laws that show a close relationship between rank and points won by the clubs participating in...

An empirical law for the rank-order behavior of journal impact factors is found. Using an extensive data base on impact factors including journals on education, agrosciences, geosciences, mathematics, chemistry, medicine, engineering, physics, biosciences and environmental, computer and material...

In this short note we compute the probability density function of the random variable XT, where Xt is a geometric Brownian motion, and where T is a random variable independent of Xt and has either a Gamma distribution or it is uniformly distributed. In the last section of the note, the...

Macro-evolutionary investigations into cross-scale patterns of body size variation have put many of the pieces of the evolutionary body size puzzle in place. To further tackle micro- and meso-scale process-based reasons underlying changes in body size, researchers compare natural populations...
