Spanish Abstract: Este artículo pretende discutir el papel, en el derecho canónico indiano, de los árbitros, cuya actuación en la resolución de conflictos fue relevante en la tradición católica por lo menos desde los primeros siglos de los cristianos. Examinando los tipos de árbitros que hay, el texto enfatiza la naturaleza consensual de esta actividad, que depende de los acuerdos firmados por las partes y por el propio árbitro. Las capacidades de tornarse un árbitro y de comprometerse con un árbitro son cuestiones relevantes aquí, así como qué temas pueden ser discutidos por un árbitro y los poderes que tenían.
