15 000 Kilometer Bahnstrecken weniger als vor 70 Jahren in Deutschland : Ost und West gleichermaßen betroffen

In Deutschland wurden in den vergangenen 70 Jahren mehr als 15000 Kilometer Bahnstrecken abgebaut. Das entspricht fast der dreifachen Länge des heutigen Streckennetzes in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Mehr als jeder vierte Streckenkilometer wurde damit seit 1955 stillgelegt – und das in Ost- wie Westdeutschland gleichermaßen. Die Streckenstilllegungen erfolgten jedoch zu unterschiedlichen Zeitpunkten: im Westen vorrangig während des "Wirtschaftswunder"-Booms, im Osten in der ökonomisch schwierigen Phase nach der Wiedervereinigung. Reaktivierungen stillgelegter und noch nicht entwidmeter Strecken könnten dazu beitragen, den Bahnverkehr schneller zurück in die Fläche zu bringen.
