A Comparative Study on Self-Concept of Employed and Unemployed Women
Self-concept is described as “something of which we are immediately aware. We think of it as the warm, central, private region of our life. As such it plays a crucial part in our consciousness (a concept broader than self), in our personality a concept broader than consciousness and in our organism (a concept broader than personality). Thus it is some kind of core in our being”. Women’s in general have devalued Self-concept. The purpose of the present study was to assess the self-concept of the employed and unemployed women. Self concept scale developed and standardized by Dr. (Miss) Mukhta Rani Rastogi was used. Sample consists of 100 women 50 employed and 50 unemployed women. Here the t test was used to assess and compare self concept of employed and unemployed women. Results reveal that there was no significant difference in general self-concept among employed and unemployed women. However no significant difference was found in dimensions like Health and sex, Appropriateness, Abilities, Present past & future, beliefs and convictions, feelings of shame and guilt and emotional maturity dimensions. Whereas the significant difference was found in the self-confidence, self-acceptance, worthiness and Sociability dimensions of self-concept. The Self-confidence, Self-acceptance, worthiness and sociability was found higher among employed in comparison to unemployed women
