A Comparative Study on the Properties of the Iron Ore Perform Sintered Through Conventional and Microwave Sintering Methods
In the present study, compacted preforms of hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ) were prepared and subsequently sintered at different temperatures i.e. 1250°C and 1300°C using conventional and microwave sintering methods. Performance of the two sintering methods was evaluated on the basis of density, porosity, microhardness, cold crushing strength, microphotographs and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the sintered preforms. Results revealed that Fe 2 O 3 can be successfully sintered, with better results and reduced sintering time, through microwave sintering method. Further, microwave sintering provided uniform heating to the powdered ore resulting in sintered preforms with lesser percentage of porosity and greater density than conventionally sintered preforms. In addition, microwave sintered preforms exhibited relatively higher cold crushing strength and hardness than conventionally sintered preforms
