A Literature Review of Securities Holdings Statistics Research
The Securities Holdings Statistics (SHS), which are collected by the European System of Central Banks (ESCB), have been the subject of extensive research over the past decade. SHS offer detailed information on portfolios, including individual securities data. SHS benefits from high coverage of euro area investors, thanks to standardized reporting and data preparation by the ECB since 2013-Q4. We present a comprehensive literature review of research conducted using the granular SHS data. We identify a growing interest in SHS, with 74 studies published so far, which have made significant contributions to three key research areas: (i) banking and finance, particularly in the areas of interconnectedness and contagion; (ii) international investment; and (iii) monetary policy research on quantitative easing. However, we note that research using SHS is still in its early stages but is rapidly expanding, particularly in the area of sustainable finance. Finally, this review discusses potential future research directions
