A Study of the Effect of Retirement on Female Employees' Cognitive Ability

Background: "Retirement" is a major turning point in life. Will people's cognitive ability change due to retirement behavior? Compared with the research on male workers, there are few studies on the impact of retirement on the cognitive ability of Chinese female workers.Objective and method:Therefore, using the data of China family panel studies (CFPS) in 2018, this paper analyzes the impact of retirement on female employees' cognitive ability and its impact mechanism through the method of fuzzy Regression Discontinuity.Results: The results show that the cognitive performance of female employees after retirement is worse. Among them, the probability of exiting the labor market, learning and social interaction play a part in the intermediary effect. Further analysis shows that there are differences in the cognitive performance of female employees with different educational backgrounds, living statuses, job levels and working areas.Conclusion: This paper provides empirical evidence of Chinese female samples for the impact of retirement on cognitive ability and tests and expands the theoretical work of the impact of retirement on cognitive ability. At the same time, it also provides some suggestions for policy makers to protect the cognitive function of retired women to help improve the cognitive ability of retired women and protect their rights and interests
