A Study on Entrepreneurship Barriers and Entrepreneurial Inclination Among Malaysian Postgraduate Students

Purpose – This paper aims to examine the relationship between perceived barriers to entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial inclination among local university postgraduates who have higher interested towards entrepreneurship world. Design/methodology/approach – In total, 100 respondents of local universities students were interviewed with a linkert scale to gather information on their social attributes towards the entrepreneurship barriers on their perspective of entrepreneurial inclination. Respondents’ perception towards four barriers factor to entrepreneurship which aversion to stress, aversion to risk, fear of failure and lack of networking and also their entrepreneurial inclination were assessed. Findings – Result indicated that tolerance for aversion to stress, aversion to risk, fear of failure and lack of social networking predicted of entrepreneurship barriers, with an adjusted R² of 0.296. The results show that the participations agreed upon the barriers for the entrepreneurship factor. Research limitation/implication – The respondents consisted entirely of postgraduate students, finding cannot be generalized to non-student population since it covers only postgraduate students. The quantitative approach used was unable to uncover in-depth information on the various barriers. A qualitative approaches may be more appropriate to obtain further details. Finally, a limitation of any survey research is the inability to ask follow-up questions and explore in more depth the reasoning behind any finding. Originality/value – This study contributes to understanding the entrepreneurship barriers toward entrepreneurial inclination at the edge of postgraduate student
