Ageism and Socioeconomic Status
People of all ages within society may be subject to the discriminatory impact of “classicism”, which has been described by the National Conference for Community Justice as “[t]he institutional, cultural and individual set of practices and beliefs that assign differential value to people according to their socioeconomic class; and an economic system that creates excessive inequality and causes basic human needs to go unmet”. Classicism depends on the ranking of persons relative to others in society based on socioeconomic status, or “SES”. Social scientists generally use several factors to describe and analyze SES including income, education, occupation, inherited wealth, financial security and subjective perceptions of social status and social class. SES is consistently correlated with quality-of-life attributes, opportunities and privileges within society and physical and psychological health and older people living in lower SES are particularly at risk. SES is a key factor in determining the quality of life for people as they grow older and, unfortunately, the level of poverty among older people around the world is sobering. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has noted that many individuals approach mandatory retirement ages without access to a pension or with pensions lower than the real cost of living, therefore experiencing their old age with acute concerns about poverty and lack of income security. Older people with low SES are at greater risk of functional decline and death, and poverty and other levels of lower SES are considered risk factors for declines in mental health and psychological disorders among older people. Not surprisingly, older people facing multiple axes of oppression (e.g., ageism, racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, and ableism) are more likely to suffer the indignities associated with low SES
