Analysis of Political Polarization and Economic Recovery in Coronavirus Policy

In evaluating the effectiveness of government stimulus programs following the onset of the coronavirus, the connection between economic recovery and political opinion is poorly understood. Using data on business formation rates, vacancies, as well traditional unemployment and inflation metrics, I attempt to understand the holistic effect of governmental stimulus on recovery. In this paper, it appears that recent inflationary trends are not connected with the rise in governmental spending that did correlate with decreased unemployment. At the same time, I evaluate public polling data to uncover a disconnect between macroeconomic data and economic confidence polling during this time period. Furthermore, an analysis of national and local political polling highlights how voters appear locked in partisan attitudes towards political parties and the presidency that cannot be undone with a single policy
