Asia-Pacific Perspectives of International Entrepreneurship

The Asian economic crisis of 1997-1998negatively impacted the Asian high-technology sector.By examining thecrisis and its consequences, researchers can better understand whatcharacteristics or factors may influence entrepreneurialperformance.Additionally, the examination of science and technology parksin both Asia and Australia provide further insight and perspective to thisissue. The technopreneurship deficiencies (in, e.g.,compiling talent, venturecapital, business concepts, management skills) throughout most of Asia are aconsequence of lacking strategic management perspectives, attitudes, and skillsamong entrepreneurs.To better understand this issue, data are compiledthrough feedback forms from 40 Asian firms surveyed between 1998 and 2001;surveys conducted over a 12-year period of public and private sectororganizations in Australia are also utilized.The organizational frameworkof Chinese SMEs is evaluated, and the effectiveness of Australian technologyparks is assessed. The challenges of implementing a strategic management framework among Asianfirms are considered, especially those concerning leadership style.Thebenefits of innovation and learning are examined.Several proceduralguidelines and governance procedures are presented, and the significance ofnetworking is reiterated.
