Assessing Nutritional Status and Purchasing Ability Amongst Adults in Mount Lebanon during the Economic Crisis 2022
Background: The ongoing evolving of economic crisis obliged Lebanese citizens to deal with a variety of daily stresses and challenges that might impair their way of living and, in turn, their health. The Lebanese economic crisis along with food price increase may have a vast impact on the nutritional status and health of the Lebanese populations, and made SDGs harder to achieve. However, little is known about the behavioral change of Lebanese adults in terms of nutritional status and purchasing ability particularly during the current Lebanese economic crisis. Therefore, this study aims to investigate and assess the nutritional status and the purchase ability amongst adults in Mount Lebanon, during the economic crisis in 2022.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, targeting a random sampling of adults in Mount Lebanon governorate using the snowball technique. It’s a quantitative research approach, based on the distribution of an online questionnaire throughout the social media platforms, during the Lebanese economic. The population included Adults aged > 25 years old and living in Mount Lebanon governorate in 10 villages (Baisour , MajdelBanaa , Niha , Khraibet el Chouf ,Falougha ,Aley ,Bhamdoun ,Aitat Ain Anoub, Mtein ).Total of 153 responses were received, and a total of 146 were selected after excluding those who didn’t complete the full questionnaire. Results: Respondents were 60.8% female. The decrease in income due to economic crisis showed negative impact on purchasing healthy food; where 90.8% claimed that their income decreased due the economic crisis and 90.8% think that their purchasing power has changed and 81% struggle to have enough money to go shopping for healthy foods (fruits, vegetables, legumes, lean meat, milk and dairy products). Moreover, there is a relation between stress and nutritional status where 86.9 % feel a change in eating habits and. 80.4% are feeling stressed and 56.9% claimed that didn’t take any corrective action including work out, and diet consultation.Conclusion: The economic crisis affected the purchasing power and the nutritional status amongst adult in Mount Lebanon. Further studies research should be implemented longitudinal with multiple designs to increase the outreach in different regions of Lebanon
