Assessing Territorial Metabolism in the Context of Small Island Spaces : The Case of a French Overseas Region, Reunion Island
Given their limited resources, small island territories such as Reunion Island are pertinent cases for exploring the possibilities for developing a circular economy. The analysis of island characteristics on this dimension involves the application of an original method, Economy-Wide Material Flow Analysis (EW-MFA), to identify material flows and exchanges between the economic and environmental dimensions. This paper attempts to explore the existence of specific territorial metabolisms in small island economies through the analysis of material flows on Reunion Island Island and a comparative analysis with another overseas department (Martinique) in comparison to two other regions in mainland France (Centre-Val-de-Loire and Ile-de-France). The findings show that overseas spaces do not present a specific profile. We can hypothesise that the history of these territories and the departmentalisation and constraints they face have encouraged these economic models to align with the metropolitan model rather than to develop a specific insular metabolism
