Assessment of Solid Waste Management Projects in Nainital District of Kumaon Himalayas, India

Solid Waste Management (SWM) is used to describe the procedure for gathering and handling solid wastes. It provides suggestions for recycling objects that don't belong in the trash or rubbish. Garbage or solid waste has been a problem for as long as there have been settlements and residential areas. The estimated quantity of Municipal Solid Waste generated worldwide is 1.7 – 1.9 billion metric tons and 2.5 billion people worldwide are without improved sanitation. The indiscriminate open dumping of municipal solid wastes in water bodies’ sources and low-lying areas without consideration of its effect on the environment and human health is a common practice in many cities of the India and Nainital is amongst them. Various projects have been implemented in the partnership of Government of India with private organizations to manage solid waste, the paper attempts to assess the impact of solid waste management projects in Nainital District of Kumaon Himalayas India and suggests policy measures in the implementations and execution of such projects for optimum results
