Asylum Policies and International Trade : Evidence from the EU

This article documents a negative correlation between asylum policies and imports into the European Union. We argue that this is driven by asylum policies being informed by inter-state tensions. Consistent with this argument, we show that the correlation is stronger in countries where governments are important buyers in the manufacturing sector. Our results highlight the potential of international relation dynamics to confound estimates of the impact of refugees on trade
