Bioresearch Ireland : Pioneering the Irish Experience of Technology Transfer

BioResearch Ireland (BRI) was established in 1988 to support Irish economic development by commercializing Irish university-based research. This was achieved through a partnership between Ireland’s five largest universities and the Industry Ministry of the Irish Government. The universities were:• Dublin City University• Trinity College, Dublin• University College Cork • University College Dublin• University College GalwayIn essence, the universities agreed to allow BRI to take the lead in the commercialization of their biotechnology research in return for funding of projects at national research centres of excellence to be established. The overall central objective was to link the biotech competence and technologies of Irish universities with Irish industry and thereby enhance overall economic activity
